You’ll cycle rugged Algarve trails by e-bike from Lagoa to Benagil and Marinha Beach with a local guide who knows every shortcut and story along the way. Expect salty air, wildflowers, laughter over lost hats, and real insight into life beyond the postcards — plus all your gear is sorted so you can just ride.
“Don’t worry, we’ll stop for the best pastel de nata after the climb,” our guide Tiago grinned as he checked my helmet strap. I didn’t know if he was joking or not, but honestly, I’d already sweated through my shirt just rolling out from o Rústico in Lagoa. The air smelled faintly of eucalyptus and salt — it’s weird how you can taste the ocean before you even see it. Our little group (seven of us, plus Tiago) wobbled onto the gravel, everyone trying to look like they’d done this before. I definitely hadn’t.
The first stretch on the e-bike was easy enough — Bosch motors are a blessing for anyone who pretends to be sporty. Tiago pointed out old fig trees and a faded fishing boat as we zipped past Caramujeira. When we reached Benagil, he told us about his uncle who used to fish there before tourists found the caves. The sun was already high and some older locals were playing cards in the shade. We left the bikes near a fence and hiked up a rocky trail; my calves complained, but then suddenly there it was — that view over Algar de Benagil. It’s loud up there: gulls screeching, waves echoing inside the cave below. I tried to say “arcos naturais” like Tiago but he just laughed and shook his head.
Marinha Beach came next — apparently one of Europe’s top ten beaches (I get why). The sand is almost orange and gritty underfoot, nothing like what I’m used to at home. We took photos at those famous arches; someone’s hat blew off and nearly went over the edge, which got us all laughing for a minute straight. After that we followed a rough path toward Albandeira beach — smaller crowd there, more wildflowers than people. My legs felt like jelly by then but honestly? I still think about that light bouncing off the cliffs when we stopped for water.
We finished back where we started, sweaty and happy (and yes — there was pastel de nata). Not every part was easy; if you’re not used to cycling or hiking much this route will test you a bit. But riding those cliff trails with a local guide like Tiago makes all the difference — he knew which rocks were loose before we did. The Algarve feels different when you’re moving through it instead of just looking at it from above.
Your day includes use of an electric bike with Bosch motor, helmet for safety throughout both cycling and hiking segments of the route, plus insurance coverage during your adventure along Algarve’s cliff trails between Lagoa, Benagil cave area, Marinha Beach’s arches and Albandeira beach before returning to your starting point at o Rústico Restaurante.
