The experience

The shop is right at the entrance to São Rafael Beach, next to the car park, and when we showed up the guide was still setting up the kayaks. Nothing wrong with that, just real. After a quick safety briefing on the sand and a run-through of the paddle basics (which took maybe ten minutes and felt thorough), we were in the water and heading toward the cliffs. The coastline here is something else: limestone walls that rise straight up, and caves carved into them that you can only reach by kayak. Our guide knew the area inside out, pointing out where the rock had collapsed years ago and which caves were safe to paddle into depending on the swell.
