The Experience

The shop is right at the entrance to São Rafael Beach, next to the car park, and when we showed up the guide was still setting up the kayaks — nothing wrong with that, just real. After a quick safety briefing on the sand and a run-through of the paddle basics (which took maybe ten minutes and felt thorough), we were in the water and heading toward the cliffs. The coastline here is something else: limestone walls that rise straight up, and caves carved into them that you can only reach by kayak. Our guide knew the area inside out, pointing out where the rock had collapsed years ago and which caves were safe to paddle into depending on the swell.

The paddle itself isn't hard — the tour is designed for all levels, and the guide sets a pace that works for everyone. You're moving along the water, and the cliffs are right there, and then you round a corner and there's a cave opening up. We stopped at a secluded beach that's only reachable by sea, and that's where the snorkeling happens. The water was clear enough to see the bottom, and the guide handed out snorkel masks before we got in. The marine life wasn't dramatic — small fish, some sea urchins, rocks covered in algae — but it felt like the kind of thing you'd miss if you were just walking a regular beach.

What made the difference was that the guide stayed with the group the whole time. He wasn't rushing us through the caves or cutting the snorkel stop short. The dry bag kept our phones safe, and there's a storage place back at the shop so you're not carrying anything onto the beach. The paddle back to São Rafael took the same route, and we finished where we started. Total time on the water was around two to three hours, depending on conditions and how long you spend at the secluded beach.
