The experience
Your guide waits for you at the main entrance of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Ostrow Tumski, the oldest part of Wroclaw. This island, fortified in the 10th century, holds the Gothic cathedral with its twin towers, the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew, and the Archdiocese Museum, which houses the Book of Henryków: a 13th-century manuscript containing the first sentence ever written in Polish. The island sits in the fork of the Oder River, though it stopped being an island in the early 19th century when one river branch was filled in.
From Ostrow Tumski, you cross the bridge over the Oder into the Old Town, where the University of Wroclaw comes into view. The Aula Leopoldina, a baroque hall inside the university's main building, is one of the stops your guide will explain. Medieval cobblestone streets lead you to the Market Square (Rynek), one of Europe's largest, ringed by colourful tenement houses and the late-Gothic Old Town Hall at its center. The hall has served the city since its construction and now houses the Museum of Burgher Art and, in its basement, the oldest bar in Europe. Ten streets feed into the square from all directions, and the central block is turned clockwise by 7 degrees. A detail your guide will point out.
The tour runs about three hours and covers the most important places on foot. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, or one of four other languages, depending on which option you choose at checkout. Entry fees to museums and attractions are optional. Your guide will tell you what's worth seeing and let you decide whether to go inside. Strollers and prams work on the cobblestones, and the pace suits all fitness levels.

What is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Ostrow Tumski?
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a 13th-century Gothic structure with twin towers, located on Ostrow Tumski island: the oldest part of Wroclaw. It marks the site where the city began as a fortified settlement in the 10th century and stands as one of the main landmarks your guide will explain in detail.
How big is the Market Square in Wroclaw?
The Market Square (Rynek) is one of the largest in Europe. It is surrounded by colourful Renaissance and Mannerist tenement houses, with the late-Gothic Old Town Hall occupying the central block. Ten streets lead into the square from different parts of the city.
What's inside the Old Town Hall?

Can I visit museums during the tour, or do I just walk past them?
Museum and attraction entry fees are optional. Your guide will tell you what's worth seeing inside (such as the Aula Leopoldina at the university or the Archdiocese Museum on Ostrow Tumski), and you can choose whether to pay and go in or continue walking.
