Meet at High Gate, 8 minutes from main station.★ 5.00 (1)2hUS$ 127View › I didn’t expect the silence at Stutthof to feel so loud. Our driver picked us up right on time in Gdansk—he gave a small nod and a “Dzień dobry” that I totally butchered back. The minibus was quiet, just a few of us watching the city fade into flat green fields. There was this faint smell of pine when we got out, and for some reason, it stuck with me all day.
The guide met us at the entrance—her English was careful but warm, like she’d said these words before but still felt them. She walked us through the old camp quarters first. The wood under my shoes creaked in a way that made me slow down without thinking about it. She pointed out photos on the walls, faces I kept glancing back at even as we moved on. I caught myself holding my breath near the gas chambers. It’s hard to explain that kind of heaviness; you just sort of carry it for a while.
We had time after to stand by the monument—no one really spoke much then. Someone left a stone on the edge; our guide said it’s something people do here, but she didn’t say more than that. The museum part came after, with more stories and artifacts behind glass. I remember the light outside looking almost too bright when we left Sztutowo for Gdansk again.
