The Experience

Rain or shine, the van pulled up right outside my hotel in Kraków—no need to figure out public transport or taxis. The drive out took about 25 minutes, winding past the city’s edge and into thick pine woods. You can actually smell the trees before you even spot the old military base gates. Our driver chatted about local history, mentioning that this place used to be off-limits during the Cold War.

The shooting range itself is tucked away in what looks like a concrete bunker. Inside, it’s all business: safety gear, targets lined up, and a faint whiff of gunpowder in the air. Our instructor—Piotr—walked us through each weapon step by step. I started with a Glock 17 (lighter than I expected), then worked up to an AK-47 and even a shotgun. The kickback on that one surprised me! Piotr kept things light but strict on safety, which helped calm my nerves.

You get to pick your package: 30, 50, or 100 bullets—honestly, those go faster than you’d think when you’re competing with friends for bragging rights. Between rounds, we swapped stories and compared target sheets. By the end, my hands smelled faintly of metal and oil. Afterward, we piled back in the van for an easy ride home—no stress about finding our way back into town.
