The Experience

Our driver Marek showed up right on time outside our Krakow hotel — he had this dry sense of humor that made the early start less painful. “You ready to make some noise?” he grinned as we climbed in. The drive out was quick, maybe 25 minutes, and I kept catching glimpses of old brick warehouses through the window. When we pulled up to the shooting range, it looked like a place you’d never just stumble into by accident — tucked away behind a row of pine trees, almost quiet except for the distant echo of gunshots that made my stomach flutter a bit.

The instructor (Piotr? I hope I’m spelling that right) handed me ear protection and started explaining everything in English — super patient even when I fumbled with the safety on the Glock. My palms were sweaty and honestly, I hesitated before squeezing the trigger on the AK47. The smell inside was this sharp mix of metal and oil, not unpleasant but definitely intense. When my friend tried the Uzi she let out this nervous laugh and Piotr just nodded like he’d seen it all before. There was this moment when I fired at the target and felt the kick in my shoulder — way more powerful than I expected. It’s weird how quickly you forget there are other people around when you’re focused like that.

Afterwards we compared our shot-up paper targets (mine looked like Swiss cheese) and took a few awkward photos holding these heavy rifles — probably not my most flattering angle but whatever. Piotr told us they have to swap out some metal targets every week because of how much damage the shotguns do; kind of wild to think about. On the ride back to Krakow, Marek asked who scored highest and then just winked at me in the rearview mirror. I still think about that first jolt from firing — it sticks with you longer than you’d expect.
