The experience
The tour starts with an 80-minute transfer from Kraków to Oświęcim. Your guide walks you through Auschwitz I, the former camp now a museum, using photographs and the original barracks to trace the story from the first deportations through liberation on January 27, 1945. That visit takes about 2.5 hours. After a short break, you board the bus again and travel to the Judenrampe (the spot between the two camps where trains arrived and people were selected), then walk the same route those prisoners took to Birkenau.
At Birkenau, the wooden barracks show what the living conditions were actually like. You walk past the train station toward the remains of gas chambers II and III, then visit the Dutch monument (Belgian guests see the Belgian one instead). The Birkenau portion takes roughly 90 minutes. A third transfer takes you to Monowitz, about 10 kilometers away, where you see the Buna factory complex the Nazis built and the camp they founded there. Though the barracks no longer stand, the factories and bunker remnants remain. You finish at the Monowitz monument before the 90-minute return journey to Kraków. The itinerary includes five sanitary stops and time at bookstores along the way.
A Dutch-speaking guide is guaranteed on every departure. Museum entry, the minibus transfer from Kraków, and the tour guide system are all included. Breakfast and lunch boxes are available as optional add-ons at checkout. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the walking involved, and the tour is not suitable for children under 14.

Top questions
How long is the actual tour time at the camps, not counting the drive from Kraków?
The on-site tour runs 6 hours, excluding the 80-minute transfer to Oświęcim and the 90-minute return to Kraków. That time covers Auschwitz I, the journey to Birkenau, the Birkenau visit, and the stop at Monowitz.
Will I walk through a gas chamber on this tour?
Yes. At Auschwitz I, you walk through a gas chamber. At Birkenau, you see the remains of gas chambers II and III but do not enter them.
What are the Dutch and Belgian barracks, and why do you visit them?
The Dutch barracks at Auschwitz I housed Dutch prisoners. Belgian guests visit the Belgian barracks instead. Seeing them gives you a concrete sense of where and how prisoners lived during the war years.
What is Monowitz, and why is it included in the tour?
Monowitz was Auschwitz III, a forced-labor camp built next to the Buna factory complex about 10 kilometers from Auschwitz I. It was the most grueling camp to work in. The tour ends there at the Monowitz monument so you see all three camp sites.
Does the minibus pick me up from my hotel in Kraków?
The tour includes minibus transfer from Kraków, but the specific pickup point depends on where you are staying. Confirm your hotel location at checkout, and public transportation options are also available nearby if you prefer to meet the group at a central point.
