The Experience

We ducked under the old stone arch into Intramuros just as the sun started to press down — not too harsh yet, but you could smell the day warming up, that mix of dust and something sweet from a street vendor nearby. There’s something surreal about rolling along cobbled streets while jeepneys honk in the distance. We stopped by the Memorare Manila 1945 monument; Paolo went quiet for a second, just letting us stand there. It felt right.

Casa Manila was next — all carved wood balconies and heavy doors. I ran my hand along a banister and got a splinter (tiny one), which made me laugh because it felt so real after all that history talk. Snacks came out — nothing fancy, but good to munch on while Paolo explained how families lived during Spanish times. By then I’d lost track of time completely; you sort of get pulled along by the rhythm of the place. I still think about that first step into Fort Santiago — how it felt like stepping into someone else’s memory.
