The basilica was founded in 1565 and is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, built on the spot where the image of the Santo Niño was found during Legazpi's expedition. The Metropolitan Cathedral, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and Saint Vitalis, was largely rebuilt in the 1950s after World War II bombing, though the belfry from 1835 and the original façade remain.
