The experience
You choose from eight different trails, all starting at the foot of Mayon Volcano outside Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga. The route crosses wide lahar fields (the volcanic debris from the 2018 eruption), and passes through hectares of coconut plantation before reaching the closest public viewpoint, 200 meters from the most recent lava rocks. Twin deep gullies cut through the landscape, and from the top you look out over Legazpi City and the municipalities of Albay. The whole ride takes about three and a half hours.
Before you ride, there's a pre-departure orientation and actual driving practice so you get comfortable with the ATV. The guides are trained and accredited by the Department of Tourism. Safety helmets are included, and the ATVs are well maintained. A guide rides with you and also acts as photographer, capturing the ride as you go. The guide speaks English or Filipino.
If you're riding solo, you'll pay an additional PHP 500 directly to the operator in cash for an exclusive departure. Children as young as 4 can ride. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The meeting point is outside Cagsawa Ruins, and public transportation options are available nearby if you're not arranging your own transport to the site.
