You’ll paddle out past Lima’s cliffs for a 90-minute surf lesson with certified instructors who know these waves inside out. Expect quick theory on shore, then most of your time riding (or wiping out) in chilly Pacific waters—with all gear provided and plenty of laughs along the way.
Ever wondered what Lima looks like from out past the break? I hadn’t really thought about it until we were paddling out, wetsuits zipped up, boards bobbing in the chilly Pacific. Our instructor—Diego, who grew up surfing this exact stretch—laughed when I fumbled my leash (apparently I put it on backwards). He just shrugged and said, “Everyone does that once.” The sky was a little grey but honestly, it made the colors of those cliffside buildings pop even more against the water.
We started with some stretches on the pebbly beach—Diego explained safety stuff in a way that didn’t feel like a lecture. Five minutes of theory, tops. Then suddenly we were out there, ducking under waves that smelled faintly of salt and seaweed (and maybe a hint of sunscreen from someone nearby). It’s weird how loud the city feels onshore but out here it’s mostly just wind and Diego shouting encouragement over the crash of waves. I wiped out more than I stood up but he kept giving tips—“Bend your knees! Look forward!” That part’s harder than it sounds.
At some point I caught one wave for real—just a few seconds standing before tumbling off—and heard someone cheering from behind. Could’ve been Diego or maybe just another local having fun. Didn’t matter; for those seconds it felt like Lima itself was watching. My hands were numb by the end but honestly? I still think about that view back at the cliffs, city stacked above us in faded pinks and yellows, all while saltwater dripped down my nose.
