The experience
The tour starts at 8:30am after pickup from the port and runs through the afternoon, hitting four distinct stops that span Moche, Chimu and Spanish colonial periods. You enter Huaca de la Luna, one of two truncated pyramids built around 2,000 years ago, where polychrome friezes still cover the interior walls and a guide walks you through the designs, colors and construction of the adobe structure. The facade stands 27 meters high and stretches roughly 100 meters across, still largely intact and painted.
From there the route moves into Trujillo's historic center, where 16th-century colonial mansions line the streets in bright colors. You walk with your guide through the city, stopping for photos and explanations of the architecture. The itinerary then takes you to Playa de Huanchaco, a fishing village where you can talk with Moche and Chimu descendants and watch the traditional totora reed rafts still used for both fishing and tourism. A lunch of fresh fish and seafood is available here, depending on the timing and your ship's departure window.
The final stop is Chan Chan, the largest mud city in the world. You enter one of nine walled palaces built in the 10th century and walk through streets, passages, warehouses and water wells to see the decorative work in mud and adobe that defined this pre-Inca civilization. The operator returns you to Salaverry port by 3:30pm at the latest, timed so you're back before the ship leaves.
