The Experience

I didn’t expect the colors to be so sharp at the Temples of the Sun and Moon. We started early—our guide, José, said it’s quieter before 9am, which turned out to be true. The air was still a little cool, and you could almost hear your own footsteps echo against those old adobe walls. José pointed out carvings that looked almost fresh, even though they’re centuries old. I kept touching the rough wall when he wasn’t looking—probably not allowed, but it felt real that way.

The Moche Huacas Museum is just down the road (maybe five minutes in the van), and it’s surprisingly modern inside. Rows of ceramics, some shaped like animals or faces—I tried guessing what they were for but got most of them wrong. José laughed and told us about rituals involving chicha beer; I can’t say I’d want to try it at 10am. There’s something about seeing those things up close that makes you imagine people living here, not just “history.”

By lunchtime we were in Huanchaco, right by the sea. The smell of fried fish mixed with salt air—honestly made me hungrier than I thought I’d be. We watched fishermen paddling those reed boats (caballitos de totora) out past the waves; one guy waved at us and shouted something I couldn’t catch over the wind. Lunch was ceviche—sharp lime and cold fish—and arroz con pato for my friend who doesn’t do raw stuff. It felt good to sit there with sand underfoot for a bit.

Chan Chan came last—the mud city is huge, much bigger than any photo shows. We walked through Nikan Palace while José explained how water used to run through these channels (it’s all dry now). There were birds nesting in some corners and kids from Trujillo on a school trip giggling nearby. It’s strange how quiet it gets inside those thick walls; you almost forget there’s a city just outside.
