Walk Arequipa's founding streets with a guide who knows the architecture, the markets and why the volcanoes matter

A small group walking tour through Arequipa's historic center led by a professional guide in English or Spanish, covering the Plaza de Armas, La Compañía Church, San Camilo Market, Mundo Alpaca and the old neighborhoods where the city began. The tour runs 2 to 3 hours on foot through the city center, with entrance fees included; you stay on the ground instead of riding through, so the details of the streets and buildings stay visible. A guide tip at the end supports the upkeep of the sites you visit.

2h–3h

Step-by-step itinerary

Walking tour of Arequipa highlights

  • Meet at the office near Cathedral
  • Explore Plaza de Armas and arches
  • Visit La Compañía Church cloisters
  • Tour San Camilo Market
  • Walk to Grau bridge for volcano views
  • See Mundo Alpaca Arequipa textile store
  • Visit traditional Cotahuasi Canyon neighborhood

The Experience

You meet at the office and start at the Plaza de Armas, where the Cathedral's façade and the arches surrounding the historical center tell the story of Arequipa's foundation and how the city became what it is today. From there the walk moves to La Compañía Church, an architectural complex with carved details and a history that stays with you. The guide explains the cloister, the figures in the stone, and why this building matters to understanding Arequipa.

The route takes you through San Camilo Market, the oldest in Arequipa, where the cultural variety of the place shows itself in the stalls and the people. Then you walk to the Grau bridge, where you can see the volcanoes—Misti among them—and the terraces and the Chili River below. That view is where the tour ends, leaving you close enough to the city center to walk to the Monastery of Santa Catalina or the Juanita Mummy Museum if you want to keep going, or to catch a taxi up to the Yanahuara Viewpoint, which is only five minutes away.

Before the walk ends, you visit Mundo Alpaca Arequipa, a textile store and small camelid zoo where the guide explains the industrial work done with alpaca fiber and the different varieties of South American camelids. These animals and the textiles made from them are old traditions in Arequipa, and the visit includes an old factory where you can see how the work happens. The tour also passes through a traditional neighborhood in the old part of the city, where the narrow streets show you where Arequipa's founding began.
