The Experience

Yanahuara sits on a ridge overlooking Arequipa, and the viewpoint there is where you see the three volcanoes — Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu — that ring the city. Your guide explains why this neighborhood is considered one of the most romantic in Arequipa, and points out the colonial church built from volcanic stone. From there, the tour moves into the center, where the walking begins.

Plaza de Armas is the city's foundation point and a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by the cathedral and stone portals that mark the shift from colonial to republican architecture. You climb to the portal viewpoint to see the square from above, with those same volcanoes framing it. Then you walk San Francisco Street to the second-most important plaza in the historic center, and through San Lázaro — the oldest neighborhood — where narrow streets are now a rest area for locals and travelers. La Compañía Church has mestizo baroque facades and altars decorated with gold leaf; San Camilo Market is a national cultural heritage site where you can see local fruits, potatoes, medicinal plants and products from across Peru.

Mundo Alpaca is a working space where you interact directly with alpacas and vicuñas in a natural setting. You watch artisans classify fiber by hand using ancestral techniques and see the traditional backstrap loom in action. The guide explains why vicuña fiber is considered the finest in the world. Because this is a private tour, you control when you start, how long you spend at each stop, and whether you want to skip ahead or leave early. If you need airport transfer at the beginning or end of the day, the driver handles that as part of the same booking.
