Step-by-step itinerary

Guided bus tour of Arequipa

  • Depart Plaza de Armas by bus
  • Visit Mirador of Carmen Alto
  • Visit Mirador of Yanahuara
  • Visit Founder mansion
  • Walk in Santa Catalina monastery
  • Visit Paucarpata terraces
  • Optional lunch break
  • Return to Plaza de Armas

The Experience

The bus leaves Plaza de Armas at 9 a.m. and heads straight to Mirador de Carmen Alto, where you get your first view of the city laid out below and the volcanoes rising beyond it. Twenty minutes later you're at Yanahuara mirador for a second angle on the same landscape. Both stops are short — enough to stand, look and photograph — and the guide stays with the group the whole way.

From there the route moves through the city itself: the Founder's Mansion, a colonial house that shows how the city's early settlers lived; a stop at IncaPalca to see Andean animals; the Santa Catalina monastery, where you walk the grounds for about 30 minutes and see the cloisters and courtyards. By midday you're at Paucarpata terraces. If you booked the 11:30 a.m. start instead of 9 a.m., the tour includes a restaurant stop where you can order Peruvian dishes (main courses start at 40 soles). The standard morning tour ends back at Plaza de Armas around 1 p.m.

The bus has comfortable seats and the guide speaks Spanish throughout. Bring sun protection for the miradors and warm layers if you're on the afternoon schedule; waterproof clothing matters during the rainy season from December through March. All transport is included; you arrange and pay for lunch yourself unless you choose the gastronomic option.
