The experience

The canopy walk starts just 200 meters from the lodge: a 35-meter tower anchored to one of the Amazon's giant trees, where you stand above the forest floor and scan for bird species with your guide. After that comes a 190-meter zipline and a 100-meter suspension bridge crossing, both with a safety briefing and instructor support. By midday you're back at the lodge for lunch, then out again on the Madre de Dios River in a kayak, with a support boat alongside and a chance to swim in the gentle current afterward.

The second morning starts at 6 a.m. with a three-kilometer trek to Lake Sandoval, one of the region's most biodiverse lakes. You board a rowboat and drift toward the center, where giant river otters, hoatzins, cormorants and anhingas move through the water. The lake is where the tour's wildlife watching concentrates. The animals are there in the early hours, and the rowboat gives you a stable platform to watch them without the noise of a motorboat engine.

Accommodation at Paradise Amazon Ecolodge, all three meals, and the Tambopata National Reserve entrance are included. Your guide is a native to the region and leads in English or Spanish. Transportation from Puerto Maldonado to the lodge and back to the airport or bus terminal is arranged for you.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What's the canopy walk actually like at 35 meters high?

The canopy tower is anchored at the base of a Lupuna tree, one of the Amazon's largest, and rises 35 meters above the forest floor. From that height you look out across the canopy and spot bird species with your guide's help. The structure is designed to give you a perspective on the scale of the rainforest itself.

Do I need to be an experienced kayaker for the river paddling?

The kayaking happens on the Madre de Dios River in gentle currents, and a support boat stays with the group throughout. You receive all necessary safety equipment, and after the paddle you have time to swim in the river.

When do you actually see the giant river otters on Lake Sandoval?

Lake Sandoval is visited on the second morning, starting with a 6 a.m. departure and a three-kilometer trek to reach it. You board a rowboat and drift toward the center of the lake, where giant river otters, along with hoatzins, cormorants and anhingas, are most active in the early hours.

Is the 2-day length enough time, or would a longer tour give you more?

Two days fit five activities: canopy walk, zipline, kayaking, Monkey Island by boat, and caiman spotting on the first day, then the Lake Sandoval rowboat on the second morning. A longer tour would add more time at each site or visit additional areas. This one prioritizes variety and returns you to Puerto Maldonado by midday on day two.

What happens if I arrive in Puerto Maldonado late or need to leave early?

Transportation from Puerto Maldonado to the lodge and back to the airport or bus terminal is included and arranged according to your flight or bus schedule. Confirm your arrival and departure times when you book.
