The Experience
The first thing that hit me was the sound—somewhere between a whistle and a chatter—echoing through the old trees as we stepped onto the trail at Jardín Botánico. It’s funny, you wouldn’t expect to find this much green so close to downtown Asunción. Our guide, Marta, pointed out a flash of blue overhead: Plush-crested Jay, she said, and handed me her binoculars. The air smelled faintly of earth after last night’s rain. I could hear kids playing soccer somewhere off in the distance, but here it felt like another world.
We wandered along narrow paths under tangled branches, stopping every few minutes when Marta spotted something new—a Pale-crested Woodpecker hammering away at a trunk, then a pair of Hooded Tanagers flitting between leaves. She knew exactly where to look for Tropical Parula; I’d have missed it without her. At one point, a troop of Brown Capuchin monkeys crashed through the canopy above us—didn’t seem bothered by us at all. There’s a little stall near the entrance selling tereré if you want to cool off before heading back. The whole walk took maybe two hours, but honestly, time just slipped by.
