The experience

Someone’s waving a sign with my name on it: never gets old, even if I always feel a bit awkward walking up. The air inside Tocumen Airport is sticky, but as soon as we step outside, our driver’s already there, grinning like he’s done this a thousand times. He grabs my bag before I can protest (I’m not great at letting people help, honestly) and leads us to the van. Air conditioning hits like a relief. There’s this faint scent of rain on warm pavement: classic Panama City afternoon.

I ask about the drive to Playa Bonita: maybe 30 minutes, give or take traffic. Our driver, Luis, points out the skyline as we pull away from the airport. He tells us stories about growing up in the city. His English is way better than my Spanish, but he still laughs when I try to say “gracias” with any kind of accent. The road curves past palm trees and flashes of ocean. It’s not long before we’re talking about food (he swears by sancocho at some roadside place I’ll probably never find again). The shuttle feels private enough that I forget I’m technically on a transfer service.

By the time we reach the Westin at Playa Bonita, I’ve already texted home that we made it safe: the WiFi in the van actually worked, which surprised me. Luis helps unload bags and gives us a quick tip about watching sunset from the hotel terrace. There’s something casual but reassuring about the whole thing. No rush, no confusion at arrivals, just an easy start to whatever comes next. I still think about how calm that ride felt after hours in airports: sometimes it’s those simple transitions that stick with you.
