Portobelo Snorkeling Tour: Playa Blanca & Mangrove Lagoon
Swim and snorkel two Caribbean beaches that have no road access, then explore a 500-year-old Spanish port on the way back.
A day trip from Panama City by speedboat to Portobelo National Park combines snorkeling at Playa Blanca with a visit to a turquoise mangrove lagoon called Venas Azules. You swim and snorkel at both stops, then return to the historic port of Portobelo (founded in 1597 as a Spanish defense against pirates) for free time to walk its seaside restaurants, galleries, and the Black Jesus Church. The speedboat is the only way to reach these beaches. No roads lead there.

The experience
If you're in Panama City with a free afternoon or a first morning, this trip solves the problem of getting to Caribbean beaches without renting a car or navigating on your own. The speedboat departs from Portobelo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can see Spanish defensive fortifications built 500 years ago before boarding. The route takes you first to Venas Azules, a mangrove lagoon with clear water where you float and explore the shoreline, then continues to Playa Blanca: a white-sand beach with turquoise water and coral reefs close enough to snorkel without a long swim.
At Playa Blanca, you have time to snorkel the reef, swim, or stay on the sand. The choice is yours and the pace is yours too. Snorkeling gear is provided, and a guide travels with the group. After the beach, the boat returns to Portobelo, where you get free time to walk the town (visit its seaside restaurants, the Spanish Customs House, local art galleries, and the Black Jesus Church), before heading back to Panama City if you booked the return transport option.
The whole day runs 6 to 9 hours depending on how you book. Hotel pickup from Panama City center is available as an add-on. If you skip it, you start in Portobelo instead. A $2 national park entrance fee is paid on arrival and is not included in the tour price.

Is this one for you?Choose the option with Panama City pickup if you want hotel-to-hotel service and don't want to arrange your own transport to Portobelo. Choose the Portobelo start if you're already in the area or prefer to meet the group there. Either way, the speedboat is the only access to these beaches, so you can't reach them on your own.
