The experience
The ranch sits 20 minutes from the airport near Cerro Azul, far enough from the city that the air is cooler and the landscape shifts to green hills and forest. You'll be picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven out to the property, where a local horse specialist gives you a short safety and technique briefing before you mount. The horses are accustomed to riders of all levels, and the trails wind through natural terrain (rolling hills, small streams and river crossings) at a pace you control. If you want to gallop, there's space to do it and the horses respond naturally to that.
The ride itself runs almost two hours, guided by someone who speaks English, Spanish or Italian. Along the way, you can stop to swim in some of the clear rivers if you want a break from riding. The whole outing takes about five hours from pickup to return, and you'll get soda, bottled water and chips during the day. Children from age 2 can ride. Those under 6 sit with an adult on the same horse.

Is this one for you?You ride the horse yourself at your own pace, not watch a demonstration or ride as a passenger, so choose this if you want to be in control and feel the terrain under you. The guide leads the group, but the almost two hours of riding is yours to shape: walk the whole way, trot when you're ready, or gallop if you've got the confidence and the guide agrees it fits your level.
