The experience

The hike covers 7.2 kilometers from the Paso Ancho trailhead to the camping area, climbing 1,675 meters of elevation through cloud forests, volcanic landscapes, and high-altitude páramo. The ascent takes 5–7 hours at a steady pace, depending on weather and group fitness. The terrain is steep, uneven and technical in sections, so moderate to good physical fitness is required. You'll reach the crater campsite in the afternoon, set up your tent, and have time to rest before sunset or make a final push to the summit if conditions allow.

Day two starts before dawn. You hike the final stretch to the summit of Volcan Barú to catch the sunrise from the highest point in Panama. Clear mornings reveal views across both oceans. After breakfast at the campsite, the group descends the same trail back to the trailhead. A bilingual guide leads both days and carries safety equipment and first aid support throughout.

Professional camping gear is provided, along with dinner on day one and breakfast on day two. Round-trip transportation from your location is included. The group stays small, and children aged 14 and up are welcome. Optional rental gear is available if you need additional equipment.
