The experience
Mohenjo-daro, meaning "Mound of the Dead Men", sits in Sindh province as one of the world's earliest major cities, built around 2500 BCE and contemporaneous with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The site was abandoned in the 19th century BCE and lay hidden until the 1920s. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. A full day on the ground lets you move through the major structures without rushing: the Buddhist Stupa, the highest and most visible point in the ruins; the Great Hall, believed to be a granary; the Great Bath, an engineering feat of the ancient city; the Assembly Hall and College of Priests; and the Mohenjo-daro Archaeology Museum, which holds artifacts that explain what daily life looked like 4,500 years ago.
The second day takes you to Sateen Jo Aastan, located on the left bank of the Indus River near Rohri. The site centers on the tomb of Mir Ab Al-Qasim Namkeen and carries the folklore of the Seven Sisters. The Indus has shaped the landscape into something quiet and open. You can sit by the water, watch for the blind dolphins that live in this stretch of the river, and look across to the Lansdowne Bridge in the distance. The journey from Karachi is 12 hours by road, but private air-conditioned transport is included, and your guide speaks English throughout.
