The experience

The tour runs about four hours from pickup to drop-off. You start by meeting a herd of reindeer and feeding them by hand, then move into the snowshoeing portion across the winter landscape. The trek lasts 1 to 1.5 hours with built-in photo breaks, so the pace stays manageable even for beginners. Snowshoes and poles are provided, and the route is designed to let you move at a steady clip without scrambling or technical sections.

After snowshoeing, you head inside a traditional gamme (a Sami dwelling) to thaw and eat. The meal is a warm traditional reindeer stew. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free versions are available. Hot drinks and cookies come with it. The bus ride back to town is included, with return between 2 and 2:15 p.m. for the morning tour or between 5 and 5:15 p.m. for the afternoon one. Children from age 8 can join, though the operator notes you'll need at least moderate fitness since you're outdoors in winter conditions for several hours.

The tour runs December 1st through March 31st, with morning departures at 9:40 a.m. and afternoon ones at 12:40 p.m. Last-minute bookings are available subject to availability. Bring your own winter coat, pants, boots and gloves. The tour does not provide those. The bus has booster seats but not infant car seats.
