The Experience

"Is that really the sea?" I asked out loud, not sure if I was talking to our guide or just myself. The light in Kvaløya does something weird—one minute it’s all silver and soft, then suddenly the mountains pop out so sharp you almost squint. We’d barely left Tromsø when the air started smelling different, colder but somehow cleaner too. Our guide, Erik, kept pointing out spots where reindeer sometimes wander down to the water. No luck for us today, but honestly, watching the clouds roll over those jagged peaks was enough.

We stopped at this little curve in the road—no sign or anything official—and Erik pulled out a thermos and these homemade sandwiches wrapped in wax paper. I’m not usually into vegan stuff but that bread was still warm and there was some kind of tangy spread I couldn’t place (he said it was his aunt’s recipe). After that we wound through fishing villages—tiny red houses against all that blue-grey water—and every so often Erik would slow down so we could snap photos or just stare for a minute. He told us stories about growing up here, how winter changes everything. The whole day trip felt relaxed but also kind of electric, like you never knew what view would show up around the next bend. I still think about that stretch where the lake mirrored the sky so perfectly it messed with my sense of up and down. Hard to explain—you sort of have to see it yourself.
