The experience
Ten hours on the mountain begins with a 4 km walk on a gravel road skirting Ringedalen Lake, then a steep kilometer of traditional trail before the Via Ferrata proper starts. After lunch and a safety briefing, you're harnessed and climbing: three rock walls, the tallest reaching 250 meters, using fixed iron steps bolted into the stone. Midway up, the Himmelstigen Sky Ladder (a 50-meter vertical climb with rungs and cable) sits optional but worth the adrenaline and the photographs it offers. The rock faces themselves resemble a ladder climb in difficulty, manageable for anyone who can handle the standard Trolltunga hike without turning back.
Views open across Ringedalsvatnet and toward Folgefonna Glacier as you climb. Once the three walls are done, the final 3 kilometers follow the main hiking trail to the tongue itself: the needle-shaped rock that juts out over the valley. You'll have time to stand there, take the picture, and absorb the scale of what you've climbed to reach. The descent retraces the main trail back down.
The operator provides all climbing gear, harnesses, and safety equipment. Hiking poles are available on request. A professional guide stays with the group throughout, handling rope management and safety checks. The day runs in English or Norwegian depending on the group. Minimum age is 15. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

The Himmelstigen (Stairway to Heaven) is a 50-meter vertical ladder climb with rungs and cable, positioned midway up the Via Ferrata route.
