The experience
Getting above Oslo takes less than an hour. From Central Station, you board the blue Line 1 subway marked Frognerseteren, which climbs the mountain through the Holmenkollen neighborhood and emerges into a winter landscape that feels far from the city below. The train itself is part of the experience: few cities let you escape into snow-covered forest this quickly. Your guide meets you at Frognerseteren station, where the snowshoe tour begins and ends.
The route winds through the Kittelsen forests on marked trails, with snowshoes and hiking poles provided. The terrain is steady rather than steep. The walk is built around reaching the viewpoint, not testing your endurance. When weather is clear, the overlook opens onto the whole of Oslo spread below. A sight that makes the city feel smaller than it actually is. You rest here with a hot chocolate, included in the tour.
The tour runs on a fixed schedule between 10:00 and 16:00, so you can book a morning slot and still have the afternoon free in the city, or take a later departure if you're arriving by train. A guide speaks English, German or Norwegian depending on the group. The minimum is three participants. If fewer book, the tour reschedules or cancels, so confirm your departure the day before.
What’s included
- Snowshoes and hiking poles for the duration of the tour.
- a warm drink (hot chocolate) at the viewpoint.
- a live guide in English, German or Norwegian.
