The experience

What does it actually feel like to cross country ski, and can you really learn it in an afternoon? This class answers both questions. You start with the basics (how to stand, how to move, how the skis work) in a calm, structured environment with instructors who've taught plenty of beginners. The group stays small and social, which means you're not watching a demonstration from a distance. You're out on the snow doing it, with real-time feedback as you go. The pace is set for people with little or no skiing experience, so there's no pressure to keep up with anyone else.

The 3.5-hour session includes all the gear you need: skis, boots, poles and layers. Partway through, you'll stop for a traditional Norwegian snack and hot chocolate, which gives you a chance to rest and warm up while staying outside. Public transportation gets you to the starting point, so you don't need a car or a driver. Children are welcome from age 12, and the instructors speak English, Spanish, Portuguese or Norwegian, so language isn't a barrier.
