The experience
You start just 15 minutes from the base camp, where your guide runs through a safety briefing before you push off into the Numedalslågen. The river earns its nickname (big waves, strong rapids, quick flow), and the paddle is relentless. Which rapids you hit depends on water level: you might face "Surprise," "Five Holes," "Cocktail," or Ismarfossen itself, the biggest cascade on any commercial rafting trip in Europe. These are technical sections where swimming is more likely, but your guide stays in the raft the whole time, and the wet suit, helmet and life jacket keep you protected and warm through the three hours.
The pace is steady and demanding. You're paddling constantly, reading the current, bracing for the drop into each rapid. There's no time to drift or recover between sections: the Numedalslågen doesn't slow down. After you pull the raft out, you head back to base for a hot shower to shake off the cold water, then sit down to hot dogs with pastry and salad.
