The experience
The Otra River is easy water, which means the current does most of the work. You paddle at your own pace while the river pushes you calmly downstream, so even first-time paddlers move through the day without fighting the flow. The water is clean enough to dip your paddle into and feel fresh on your hands. A guide meets you at the starting point, called Haus, and teaches you how to get into the kayak safely and how to paddle before you leave the bank.
The route takes three hours from start to finish. You travel through forests with tall trees on both sides, and the soundscape shifts as you paddle: birds singing in the canopy, the paddle hitting water, the kayak gliding forward. As the river widens near Kristiansand, the landscape opens up and buildings appear alongside the trees. The tour ends at Kjøita 10, about a kilometer from where you started and a ten-minute walk from the city center, so you can step out of the kayak and explore on foot.
Pickup happens at Odderøyveien 5 in Kristiansand, and a car takes you ten minutes to the launch point. You get a stable, comfortable kayak; a paddle; a flotation vest; and storage space in the kayak for a small backpack or jacket. The guide stays with you throughout and offers personal feedback on your paddling. Bring your phone if you want to take pictures. The operator leaves that choice to you.
