Four hours on the water with a fishing line, then sauna and Arctic cold plunge on the shore.

A full-day fjord cruise in Arctic Norway aboard the restored Biskop Hvoslef combines a four-hour fishing expedition through the fjords with onboard refreshments, a traditional fish soup meal, and access to a seaside sauna with optional cold plunge. The group stays under 12 guests, and minibus transfer from Moillkoscafé is included. A guide in English or Norwegian leads the day, and fishing equipment is provided onboard or you can bring your own.

Step-by-step itinerary

Fjord cruise with local experiences

  • Meet host at Moillkoscafé
  • Receive safety briefing and itinerary overview
  • Board historic Biskop Hvoslef vessel
  • Enjoy four-hour fjord cruise
  • Try fishing with provided equipment
  • Have homemade fish soup and fresh focaccia

The Experience

Six to seven hours total, starting with a warm welcome at Moillkoscafé in Malangen. Your guide introduces the historic vessel, walks through the day's route and safety, then you board the minibus for the short transfer to the harbour. The Biskop Hvoslef is a beautifully restored ship built for these waters, and the crew knows the fjords well enough to find the fishing grounds where Arctic cod are running. Light snacks and beverages are available onboard during the cruise.

The four-hour fishing stretch is the heart of the day. Equipment is set up for you, or bring your own if you prefer. You're fishing the actual fjord, not watching a demonstration — the catch depends on the season and the day, and what matters is the time on the water with the landscape moving past. When the fishing window closes, the boat turns back toward the harbour and Moillkoscafé.

After returning, the group gathers at Moillkoscafé for a traditional homemade fish soup made from local ingredients and fresh focaccia. Then you move to the seaside sauna to warm up and recover from the morning on deck. The Arctic cold plunge is optional — some people take it, some don't. The sauna itself is the main event, and it sits right on the water so you can step outside and feel the temperature shift between the heat and the air.

Operated by Malangen Arctic Experience

Is this one for you?The small group size — 12 people maximum — means you're not competing for fishing space or sauna time, and the minibus transfer keeps the logistics simple on arrival. If you want to fish the actual fjord instead of watching a demonstration, and you're willing to spend a morning on deck in Arctic conditions, this tour holds the day together without you arranging transport or meals separately.

Top questions

What happens if I don't catch anything while fishing on the fjord cruise?

The fishing is real — the catch depends on the season and conditions — but the homemade fish soup after the cruise is included regardless, so lunch is guaranteed. The four hours on the water is the experience, not the catch itself.

Is the Arctic cold plunge mandatory, or can I skip it?

The cold plunge is optional. You have access to the seaside sauna either way, and the plunge is there if you want it — many people take it, some prefer to stay warm after the morning on deck.

How does the minibus transfer work from Moillkoscafé?

You meet at Moillkoscafé in Malangen for the welcome, then the minibus takes your group to the harbour for boarding. The transfer is included in the tour price and is a short ride to the dock.

Can I bring my own fishing equipment instead of using what's provided?

Yes, you can bring your own fishing gear if you prefer. Equipment is available onboard for everyone, but experienced anglers often bring their own setup.

Are children allowed on this tour, and what about drinks for younger travelers?

Children are welcome from age 1 onward. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller. Alcoholic beverages are only served to travelers 18 and older; minors receive non-alcoholic drinks instead.

What's the physical demand of this tour — do I need to be fit to participate?

The tour is suitable for most travelers across fitness levels. Some movement on board and basic steps are needed when boarding and disembarking, but nothing extreme. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need an alternative to the minibus.
