Meet 35 Alaskan huskies and choose whether to drive or ride

Private husky sledding in Målselv, a 4.5-hour activity from Tromsø where you drive your own dog team, share the driving, or ride as a passenger with your guide. Only your group participates, so the route, pace and participation adapt to your family, confidence and physical abilities. Warm Norwegian lunch around a wood fire, winter gear, and return transfer from Bardufoss are included.

The experience

The kennel holds 35 Alaskan huskies, each with their own personality. Your guide introduces you to the dogs before harnessing the teams, explaining how they work and what to expect on the trail. You then choose your role: drive your own sled, take turns driving with someone in your group, or sit in the sled while your guide handles the team. No experience is required. Because this is a private experience, the guide adapts everything (the route, how long you run, even which dogs go out), based on the weather, trail conditions, how the dogs are feeling that day, and what works for your group.

The route follows quiet trails through boreal forest and into Arctic mountain landscapes. You'll usually stop partway through for warm Norwegian lunch (typically reindeer soup, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available when you request them in advance) around a wood fire in the mountains. Back at the farm, the log cabin offers hot drinks and snacks before you head out. Winter overalls, boots and gloves are provided. The kennel is a certified Norwegian Ecotourism company and prioritizes responsible travel and animal welfare above all else.

Pickup is included from Bardufoss sentrum if you're traveling by public bus from Tromsø (bus tickets themselves are separate). Your guide speaks English, Norwegian or Danish. The activity suits families with young children, older guests and anyone who prefers a less physically demanding way to experience dogsledding, though the operator asks that you contact them in advance if you have reduced mobility, specific accessibility needs or very young children so they can discuss how to adapt the experience.
