You’ll hike an old trail with a local guide, hear stories about Mo I Rana’s past, and see the city from above at Tjuvtrappa. There’s time for coffee and lunch at the top—plus those small details you only get from someone who knows the area inside out.
The morning air in Selfors always feels a bit crisp, even in summer. We met our guide at Brennsletta just before 10 a.m.—he was already chatting with a couple from Oslo about the old farms nearby. The trail starts out gentle but gets steeper as you climb; it’s not paved or marked with signs, so having someone local really helps. You’ll notice patches of wildflowers poking through the rocks and, if you’re lucky, catch the faint smell of pine needles after last night’s rain.
Halfway up, our guide paused to tell us why it’s called “Tjuvtrappa”—the “Thief-stairs.” Turns out, there aren’t any stairs at all. Years ago, a woman dragged a stolen cow up this rugged hillside from Loftfjellgården. No one knows how she managed it, but that story stuck. The path itself sort of zig-zags like steps carved by time and weather. At the top—about 400 meters above sea level—you get this wide view over Mo I Rana and its patchwork of neighborhoods. We found a spot near some old birch trees where our guide brewed coffee on his little stove (unless it’s too dry for fire). Lunch tastes better up there, trust me.
The trail is moderately challenging with some steep sections. It’s best if you have decent fitness and are comfortable walking uphill for stretches.
