Step-by-step itinerary
Fishing adventure in Alta Fjord
- Board the boat in Alta Fjord
- Fish for cod, coalfish, haddock, redfish, halibut
- Request filleting and packing of catch
- Take your fish home after tour
The experience
Alta Fjord fishes for species that reward patience: cod, halibut, redfish and haddock move through these northern waters, and your guide (a local who knows where they gather) will position the boat where your odds are best. If you have a particular fish in mind, ask beforehand and the guide will head to the areas where it's most commonly found. You cast from the boat, feel the line, and land what bites. The whole thing runs two hours, which is long enough to hook something real but short enough to fit the rest of a northern day.
Everything you need to fish is there: rental gear, a life jacket that stays on, a warm coverall that cuts the wind, and borrowed boots, woolen socks, mittens and headwear if you need them. The fjord's waters tend to be calmer than open sea, though conditions shift with the weather. If seasickness is a concern, take medication three hours before you leave the dock. Upon request, the guide can filet and pack your catch, but you'll carry it with you after the tour. Plan ahead if you want to cook it that night or ship it home.
Children from age 6 can fish here. Younger children need to request permission directly with the operator beforehand. The guide speaks English and Norwegian, so the instruction and the banter work in either language. You'll need a moderate level of fitness to handle two hours on the water and the motion of casting and reeling.
