The experience
The day starts in Korca, Albania: a small town caught between its communist past and a modern present. The old bazaar spreads across 138 first-category cultural monuments, its cobblestone streets once filled with serenades played on guitars. The Museum of Medieval Art holds religious icons from the 13th and 14th centuries, some of the most beautifully preserved medieval objects from the surrounding region. After Korca, you cross into Greece and Kastoria, a town built on the shores of Orestiada Lake, where you'll walk the waterfront and watch pelicans and cormorants drift past. Lunch or a coffee break happens at one of the lakeside restaurants, where you can taste the local cuisine.
The centerpiece is Dragon's Cave, a half-hour guided tour through chambers divided into sections of land and water, both studded with stalactites. The cave takes its name from local legend. If weather allows, the return to Ohrid runs through Galichica National Park instead of the direct route, adding another layer of landscape to the day. Your guide drives an air-conditioned car or minivan and handles all the logistics. Pickup and drop-off happen at your hotel or wherever you choose in Ohrid.
