The experience

Lagos is your starting point. The first two days move through the city's cultural landmarks: the Kalakuta Museum, where Fela Kuti's former home preserves his legacy as an Afrobeat pioneer; the Nike Art Gallery across four floors of contemporary and traditional Nigerian art; the Lekki Conservation Center's 78 hectares of coastal rainforest with canopy walkways; and the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture. Then you cross into Benin, stopping at the Badagry Slave Museum in Nigeria before the border, where the Amazon Statue marks the transition between nations.

Benin holds four days of the itinerary. You navigate the Ganvie Stilt Village by boat, where the Tofinu people live in houses built on Lake Nokoué's waters, then visit the Royal Palaces of the Dahomey Kingdom in Abomey. Ouidah anchors three nights: you walk the Ouidah Slave Route and pass through the Door of No Return, explore the Musée de la Fondation Zinsou, and attend an evening Zamgbetor masquerade performance. The route then moves into Togo, passing the Agbodrafo Slave House and Togoville Cathedral before reaching Lomé and the Togo National Museum.

Ghana occupies five days. Accra's itinerary includes Black Star Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park, the W. E. B. Du Bois Center for Pan-African Culture, Jamestown's colonial-era architecture and James Fort, and the Accra Art Center. From there, you travel to Cape Coast and Elmina on the coast: Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are both UNESCO World Heritage sites where you walk through the Door of No Return and confront the slave trade's history. Kakum National Park's canopy walkway suspends you above the rainforest, and you end with an evening at Elmina Beach.

Côte d'Ivoire fills the final four days. A long drive from Cape Coast crosses the Ghana-Ivory Coast border into Abidjan, where you tour the Cathedral of Saint Paul, the Grande Mosquée, and the city's beaches and artisanal markets. Yamoussoukro's Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, one of the world's largest churches, dominates a day trip, along with the Palais Présidentiel. Back in Abidjan, Grand Bassam's colonial streets and beaches, the Galerie Eureka contemporary art space, and the Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire complete the journey before departure.
