The experience

The tour starts at your hotel and moves through Managua in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle with your bilingual guide. You'll visit Tiscapa Viewpoint, where a lookout on a hilltop overlooks both the old and new parts of the city, and see the old presidential palace. At Revolution Square and the Old Cathedral, your guide points out the bullet holes still visible in the walls from 1979, then walks you through the history of the 1990 Metropolitan Cathedral, which sheltered people during the 2018 protests.

Mercado Roberto Huembes is where you spend time on foot with your guide, moving through the market to see colorful handicrafts and local goods. You can buy souvenirs if you want. The tour also includes a stop at Paseo Colon by the lake, where walking replicas of historic churches and museums from across Nicaragua stand in one place, and you can eat at one of the 30-plus restaurants there if you're hungry. The tour ends at El Crucero, a hilltop lookout with views of volcanoes, the lake and the city, where you sit with a cup of organic coffee and watch the sunset.

Your guide speaks English and Spanish and stays with you throughout, handling the route and the stops. Hotel or airport pickup and drop-off are included, as are entrance fees to Salvador Allende Port and Tiscapa Viewpoint. The pace allows time for photographs and questions, and the tour suits all fitness levels.
