The experience

Punta Jesús María is the westernmost point of Ometepe, where a narrow strip of sand stretches up to a kilometer into Lake Nicaragua during the dry season: water splashing in from both sides as you walk. In the rainy season the water level rises and the spit can disappear, so the island itself changes with the season. The tour includes ferry tickets from Granada and transportation to San Jorge Port, so the logistics of reaching the island are handled before you arrive.

Charco Verde is a protected reserve nestled between Ometepe's two volcanoes at the island's southern end. The reserve holds a lagoon called Laguna Verde, a forest, and a beach. You hike through the forest to Bancon beach (a quiet, sheltered spot for swimming), and back to the entrance, a walk of around an hour if you don't linger at the water. The hike lets you see the mainland on the horizon and move through the forest without crowds. After, you head to Ojo de Agua in the community of Santo Domingo, a natural pool fed directly from Concepción Volcano. The water is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur and sodium: minerals that draw locals and visitors alike to soak and relax under the shade of tropical trees, often with coconut water in hand.

The tour also includes a stop at Playa Mango on the island's western shore, a quieter beach where you can swim and take in the landscape. A bilingual guide leads the day in English or Spanish, and hotel pickup is included if you depart from Granada. If you're already on Ometepe, you can join the tour there instead. Entrance fees to all attractions and ferry tickets are covered, so you pay nothing extra at each stop.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (5 to 10 years). Under 5: they can't be included in the booking.

What is Punta Jesús María like when I walk it?

Punta Jesús María is a sand spit that stretches as far as a kilometer into Lake Nicaragua during the dry season, with water from the lake splashing in from both the left and right as you walk. In the rainy season, the water level rises and the spit can disappear entirely, so what you see depends on when you visit.

The hike from the entrance through the forest to Bancon beach and back takes around an hour if you don't stop to swim or rest at the beach. The trail passes through the forest between Ometepe's two volcanoes and offers views of the mainland across the water.

What makes Ojo de Agua different from other swimming spots?

Ojo de Agua is a natural pool fed directly from Concepción Volcano, so the water is volcanic and rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur and sodium. You bathe under the shade of tropical forest, and many visitors bring or buy coconut water to drink while they soak.

Do I need to arrange my own way to the island from Granada?

No. Ferry tickets from Granada to Ometepe and transportation from San Jorge Port are included in the tour price. If you're staying on Ometepe already, you can choose to join the tour there instead and skip the ferry leg.

What should I bring for a day on the island?

Bring appropriate clothing and proper shoes for hiking, a rain jacket if visiting in the rainy season, a bottle of water, sunscreen, a towel and swimsuit. You'll be in and out of water at multiple stops, so pack accordingly.
