The only cloud forest on this side of the Pacific grows on a dead volcano where you can hike and zip line the same day.

Hike the trails around Mombacho Volcano's four craters through cloud forest found nowhere else in the Pacific, then zip line across 17 platforms and three hanging bridges set between the trees. A certified guide leads the full day in English or Spanish, with private transport from your hotel. The activity suits anyone 14 and up. You'll spot howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, endemic birds and reptiles along the way.

The experience

Mombacho has three distinct hiking routes (The Crater, El Tigrillo, and El Puma) each one winding through the same rare cloud forest that blankets the volcano's four craters. The humidity that feeds this forest type also draws howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, snakes, deer, reptiles, birds and insects. Several species live nowhere else. You walk at your own pace with your guide, stopping to spot wildlife and take in the views across the forest canopy.

After the hike, the zip line takes over where the trails end. Seventeen platforms and 11 cables span more than two kilometers through the forest, with three hanging bridges strung between them. You move from tree to tree, suspended above the same landscape you just walked through below. The whole experience runs six hours from pickup at your hotel to drop-off, with entrance to the reserve and a certified guide included throughout.

The operator offers departures from either Granada or Managua, so the starting point depends on which option you choose at checkout. Public transport to the volcano is available if you prefer to arrange your own way there. A multi-lingual guide is possible, though English and Spanish are standard.

Is this one for you?Book from Granada if that's your base. Book from Managua if you're arriving or departing from the capital. Either way, the private transport means you don't coordinate a separate ride, and the six-hour structure lets you fit the volcano into a single day without rushing between activities.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What kind of animals will I actually see on the Mombacho trails?

Howler monkeys and white-faced monkeys are common sightings, along with snakes, deer, reptiles, birds and insects. Several species are endemic to Mombacho, meaning they live nowhere else on earth.

How long does the zip line part take compared to the hiking?

The zip line is part of the same six-hour outing, not a separate activity. You hike the crater trails first, then move to the zip line platforms afterward. The guide structures both into one continuous day.

Do I need to be in great shape to do both the hiking and the zip line?

The activity suits all physical fitness levels. The minimum age is 14, and it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health, but otherwise fitness level is not a barrier.

Is the cloud forest really only found in two places in the Pacific?

This type of cloud forest grows on Mombacho and on Maderas Volcano in Ometepe, making it exceptionally rare. The humidity that sustains it is what draws the wildlife and creates the canopy you move through on both the hikes and the zip line.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

Entrance to the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve, a certified guide, and private round-trip transport from your hotel are all included. Food and drinks are not, so bring water and snacks for the six-hour day.
