The experience

The tour starts at 4:00 PM each day, and you travel by vehicle to the summit of Masaya Volcano as the sky darkens. The park itself covers 54 km² and holds two volcanoes and five craters. The active crater you visit was named "La Boca del Infierno", the Mouth of Hell, by Spanish conquerors, who placed a cross on the rim in the 16th century. By the time you reach the crater edge, dusk has fallen or night has already arrived, and thousands of stars fill the sky above.

From the crater lip, you look down into the volcano and see a lava lake flowing from the bottom, its incandescent color bright enough to illuminate the interior walls. The wind moves freely across the rim, and you hear a sound like the rumbling of the sea. The crater visit itself runs 10–20 minutes depending on how many visitors arrived before you. Everyone enters in order of arrival. This is the core of the tour (the moment the product is built around), and it is why the nighttime timing matters: in daylight, the glow would be invisible.

The day includes a stop at the museum before or after the crater, depending on the light. Transportation from your hotel in Granada (or Managua, depending on which option you book) is arranged.
