The experience
You arrive at Rayo dock and board a boat to Zopango Island, a private property closed to cruise-ship tourists and day-trippers. The island runs entirely on solar power with no visible electric lines or generator noise, and the water comes from a three-step filtration system. Once you land, the day is yours to structure: kayak the calm bay for as long as you want in a high-standard sit-on-top kayak made in France, swim in safe shallow water, or claim a hammock and a beach chair while the island's birds, turtles and iguanas move through the thatched-roof rancho and surrounding forest.
Lunch is a fish BBQ with seasonal fruit platters and island-made fruit juices, served whenever you're ready to eat. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French and stays available, but the rhythm of the day is yours to set. Most guests split their time between paddling and swimming, with breaks in the hammocks. The boat returns you to Rayo dock at the end of the day.

Is this one for you?The boat leaves from Rayo dock, so if you're staying elsewhere or without a car, you'll need to arrange your own transport to the dock. Once there, everything else (the boat, kayak, lunch and the day's pace), is settled, and you can spend seven hours moving between the water and the island at your own rhythm.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and French.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I kayak if I've never paddled before?
Yes. The kayaks are unsinkable sit-on-top models and the waters around Zopango are calm and shallow, making them suitable for all fitness levels and experience. The guide can show you how to paddle, and you control how long and how far you go.
What wildlife will I see from the kayak?
Birds, turtles and iguanas live on the island and in the surrounding waters. You'll spot them from the kayak and from the island itself, especially if you paddle the quieter edges of the bay early in the day.
How do I get to Rayo dock if I don't have a car?
Rayo dock is the departure point, and you'll need to arrange your own transport there. Once you arrive, the boat to Zopango and back is included.
Is the island private, or will there be other tourists?
Zopango Island is private and open to guests only. Unlike other islands in the Asese Bay, cruise-ship tourists and day-trippers in private boats are not allowed to stop there, so the island stays uncrowded.
What's included in the lunch?
Fish BBQ, seasonal fruit platters, and island-made fruit juices are included. Coffee is also available. Alcoholic beverages are not included.
