The experience

You walk into Te Papa and it doesn’t really feel like a museum at first: more like you’ve wandered into a giant living room that belongs to all of Aotearoa. There’s this gentle hum from families and schoolkids (lots of them, actually), and the light off Wellington harbour sneaks in through the glass. I still had my bag on when a host with a bright scarf waved me over. Just flashed my ticket from my phone, no fuss, then she pointed out where to find the Māori taonga upstairs. She said “taonga” like it meant something precious, which I guess it does.

I didn’t expect to get pulled in by the textures: the carved wood in the marae room was smooth under my hand (I asked if I could touch, just to be sure). There was this faint cedar smell too. Somewhere nearby, two teenagers were arguing about whether the colossal squid was real or just a model (it’s real, by the way, it looks kind of sleepy behind glass). My favorite bit might’ve been a quiet corner with paintings of wild New Zealand landscapes. Someone’s granddad was explaining birdsong to his granddaughter in te reo Māori. She giggled every time he rolled an R.

We ended up spending way longer than planned. There’s so much packed in here about New Zealand’s history and people that you sort of lose track of time. The café was busy but not rushed. I grabbed a flat white (tastes better after all that wandering). It rained for five minutes outside and then cleared up again, typical Wellington. If you’re an international visitor over 16 you’ll need a ticket for general admission (locals just stroll right in), but honestly, I’d do it again just for another look at those woven cloaks and that feeling you get when you stand inside the wharenui with all those stories around you. Hard to explain until you’re there.
