The Experience

The skybridge at Otari-Wilton's Bush is where the day begins — a hundred hectares of native forest and regenerating bush that looks nothing like the suburbs you just left. Your guide walks you across the canopy, pointing out Tui and Kaka and Kereru, birds that were extinct in this region only 25 years ago. The botanical garden here is one of six-star significance, which sounds formal until you're standing in it and realizing you're looking at what Wellington's landscape was before anyone built a city. After that, you're back in the 4WD Mercedes heading south.

The Seal Coast Safari route cuts through Terawhiti Station, one of New Zealand's oldest and largest working farms, and you'll see sheep, cows and goats scattered across the paddocks as you climb. Once you reach the ridgeline, the views open — Cook Strait, the Kaikoura Ranges, the South Island in the distance. Your guide explains the wind farm up there, 62 turbines that power every house in Wellington, and how it's kept the farming operation alive in conditions that are genuinely harsh.
