Step-by-step itinerary

Private family bike tour experience

  • Get picked up with your group

The Experience

You pick the trail — Wanaka and Hawea routes, Lake Dunstan, Roxburgh Gorge, or stretches of the Otago Rail Trail — and the company picks you up from your accommodation. A Guest Experience Manager briefs you on the bikes and the route, checks that seats and gear fit, then you ride self-guided at your own pace. The manager stays reachable by direct mobile number throughout the day and appears at various points along many trails. If anyone in the group gets tired, additional pickups can be arranged to meet you further along.

The e-bikes come fitted with helmets that have impact protection, locks, pumps and repair kits. Each bike carries a rear trunk bag so you don't have to wear a backpack. The tour runs 6 to 8 hours depending on the trail you choose, and the manager provides commentary during transfers to and from the trailhead. The company operates year-round except Christmas Day and Anzac Day, so the same trails work in spring, summer, autumn and ski season.

If your family wants to ride more than one trail, you can book consecutive days and link the experiences together. The operator is Qualmark Gold accredited, which means the bikes, safety gear and support meet formal standards.

Is this one for you?At 6 to 8 hours, the tour leaves room for breakfast before pickup or a late lunch after, so it slots into a full day without taking over the whole one. The self-guided format means your family rides at its own pace and stops when it wants to, which works for groups with mixed fitness or ages — the manager can arrange pickups for anyone who needs them without holding everyone back.
