The Experience

You're picked up from your Wanaka accommodation at a time that suits you, then driven to Smiths Way where the Lake Dunstan cycleway begins. After a quick 20-minute e-bike orientation, you roll out onto a serene, flat 16-kilometer section that follows the water's edge. The trail is wide and gentle—designed for beginners—and the e-bike motor handles the work, so the pace stays easy even if you've never ridden one before. You'll pass through Cromwell's heritage precinct, a gold-rush-era town dating back to the 1860s, where you can stop for coffee and walk around before continuing.

From Cromwell, it's another seven kilometers along the Kawarau arm of Lake Dunstan to the Bannockburn bridge, where the landscape shifts into vineyard country. This is where the Dunstan Cycle Trail connects to Carrick Winery, and from there a marked route links six different wineries and dining spots across the Bannockburn region. You're not on a fixed itinerary—you choose which venues to visit and how long to spend at each one. The region is known for distinctive Pinot Noirs and complex wines, and most stops offer cheese boards and local food to pair with tastings. The e-bike makes moving between venues effortless, even after a few glasses.

When you've had enough, you call the driver and they collect you from wherever you are, handling the return journey to your accommodation so the wine stays in your glass instead of behind the wheel. The whole outing runs six hours from pickup to dropoff, but only about two hours of that is actual riding.
