The experience

Picton sits at the edge of the Marlborough Sounds, where the Queen Charlotte Sound opens into sheltered water lined with native bush and secluded beaches. The day starts with a safety briefing, then you paddle out with a guide who stays with you to answer questions and watch for your comfort. The kayaks are stable and built in New Zealand for these conditions. You get a paddle, spray deck, buoyancy aid, paddle jacket and dry bags for a camera or phone.

The route is not fixed. Your guide reads the wind and sea each morning and steers toward the coves and beaches that work best that day, which means the paddling adapts to the group's ability rather than forcing everyone through the same plan. You have a good chance of seeing stingrays, eagle rays, cormorants, seals, starfish and sometimes little blue penguins or dolphins. Lunch is made locally and brought along in the kayaks. The operator calls it the best kayaking lunch in the Marlborough Sounds, and eating it on a beach is part of the day.

The full day runs 7.5 hours from start to finish. A minimum of two people per departure is required. Solo travelers should contact the office to check availability for the date you want.

Is this one for you?The full day is 7.5 hours on the water, which leaves room for other activities in Picton before or after, but not a second major outing the same day. Small groups mean you paddle with fewer than a dozen others, and the guide adjusts the route daily rather than running the same route every departure, so the experience shifts with the weather and the people in the kayak that morning.
