The Experience

You walk into the check-in zone at the Agrodome in Rotorua, and within 15 minutes you're on a shuttle heading to the National Kiwi Hatchery. The facility sits right on the grounds, purpose-built and quiet. Your guide meets you and the group is small — that matters when you're about to step into rooms where kiwi eggs sit under precise incubation systems and newly hatched chicks rest in climate-controlled nurseries. This is the national leader in kiwi husbandry, and it shows in every detail.

The tour runs about an hour, and it moves through three main spaces. First, you see the incubation and hatching lab — the technical heart of the operation. Your guide walks you through how eggs are monitored, turned, and brought to hatch, and you learn that this hatchery has successfully raised over 2,600 kiwi chicks since it began. If you're visiting between September and March, hatching season, you have a real chance of seeing eggs or newly hatched chicks up close. Outside those months, the chicks won't be visible, but the interactive kiwi burrow lets you crawl through a replica of how kiwi live in the wild — tight spaces, dark, designed so you understand the bird's world. Then comes the Nocturnal House, where resident adult kiwi forage and move around you in a dimly lit enclosure built to mimic their natural habitat.

What makes this different from a typical wildlife attraction is that it's a working conservation program, not a display. Your ticket entry fee goes straight back into the hatching and rearing work. The guide explains the challenges — why kiwi numbers dropped, what the program does to reverse it, what happens to chicks once they're old enough to release. You're not just watching; you're funding the thing you're learning about. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and children from age five up can participate, though kids under five aren't admitted.

What’s included

Your experience includes a 1-hour guided tour through the incubation and hatching lab, access to the interactive kiwi burrow, entry to the Nocturnal House where you'll see live kiwi, a return shuttle from the Agrodome check-in zone, and insight into the conservation program that has hatched over 2,600 kiwi chicks. Your ticket entry fee is donated directly to the National Kiwi Hatchery's hatching and rearing program.
