Inside the caves where thousands of glow worms light the dark water

You paddle out at dusk on Rotorua Lakes, explore the shoreline as light fades, then drift inside glow worm caves where thousands of bioluminescent insects light the rock above your head. If skies are clear, you navigate back under the Milky Way. Pickup and all gear are included; no kayaking experience required. Plan for an evening commitment — the full experience is a few hours, and that's what makes the transition from daylight to stars possible.

The Experience

The paddle starts at dusk, when the lake is still holding the last warmth of the day. Your guide meets you at the Rotorua Information Centre on Fenton Street and drives you past the Redwood forest to the lake base — about twenty minutes out of town. Once there, you gear up in the provided equipment: kayak, paddle, life jacket, the works. The guide walks through safety and basic strokes, nothing complicated, and then you're on the water following the shoreline as the light drains from the sky. No experience needed; the pace is steady and the guide stays close.

When it's dark enough, the guide leads you toward the small caverns cut into the lake edge. Inside, the glow worms hang from the rock ceiling like a second sky — thousands of them, each one a pinprick of cold blue-green light. You float there in the dark, kayak drifting, and the only sound is water lapping against stone. It's the kind of quiet that makes you stop talking. The guide gives you time to sit with it, to let your eyes adjust, to understand what you're looking at. Then you paddle back out and follow the shoreline home, and if the sky is clear, the Milky Way is there above you, which feels like the glow worms decided to show up twice.

The whole thing takes a few hours from pickup to drop-off. Groups stay small — one guide per eight kayakers — so it never feels crowded or rushed. You're paddling with maybe a handful of other people, which means the guide can actually see you, can adjust the pace, can answer questions. By the time you're back at the base, you've usually made friends with whoever was in your boat, which happens naturally when you're floating in the dark together looking at something nobody forgets.

What’s included

  • Your evening includes hotel or information centre pickup from central Rotorua, transport to the lake base past the Redwood forest, all kayaking equipment and safety gear, a guided paddle along the shoreline at dusk, entry into the glow worm caves, and return transport to Rotorua.
  • Water-friendly shoes are provided free if you don't bring your own.
  • Groups stay under eight kayakers per guide, ensuring personal attention throughout.

Top questions

Do I need kayaking experience?

No. The guide runs through basic instruction before you launch, and the pace is steady and close. It's designed for all fitness levels and ages 5 and up.

What if it's cloudy or rainy?

The glow worms show up regardless of weather. Clear skies mean stargazing on the paddle back, but the caves themselves are the main event and don't depend on the forecast.

How long is the tour?

A few hours total, including the drive from Rotorua, gearing up, paddling, and the cave time. Plan for an evening commitment.

What should I wear?

In summer (November–February), light layers and water-friendly shoes. In cooler months (March–October), warm layers, hat, and gloves; wetsuits are provided. Shoes are free if you don't have them.

Is pickup included?

Yes. The guide picks you up at the Rotorua Information Centre on Fenton Street and drops you back there after the tour.

Can children go?

Yes, ages 5 and up. One adult must supervise one child under 16 at all times.

What's included in the price?

All kayaking equipment, life jackets, safety instruction, the guide, and transport from Rotorua. No hidden fees.

Are there any health restrictions?

The tour isn't recommended for people with poor cardiovascular health or spinal injuries. Check with the operator if you have concerns.
