Climb real rock with a guide who keeps you safe and challenged at your own level.

An introduction to outdoor rock climbing in Matukituki Valley near Wanaka, taught by a qualified guide over a half day. You'll wear a harness and helmet, learn safe technique, and spend most of the session actually climbing on real stone rather than listening to instruction. The guide picks the rock and the route to match your group's ability, so absolute beginners and experienced indoor climbers work side by side without anyone feeling out of place.

The experience

You meet at Basecamp Wanaka Climbing Centre or get picked up from your accommodation, then head into Matukituki Valley to the climbing location your guide has chosen for the group. The guide brings all the technical equipment (harness, shoes, helmet), and fits you with it on site. The first part of the session covers the basics of safe climbing and good technique, but the real focus is getting you onto the rock as fast as safely possible. You'll spend 3 to 3.5 hours actually climbing, not sitting through a lecture.

The guide selects from a range of climbs suitable for absolute beginners or for climbers who want something harder, and keeps group sizes small so everyone gets attention and gets challenged at their own level. You're climbing on the doorstep of Mt Aspiring National Park with mountain views around you, and the guide is there on the rock with you, not watching from below. After the climbing, you head back to the vehicle and return to your starting point.
