The experience
You'll spend about 90 minutes on the water paddling grade 2 rapids: the kind with gentle rolling waves rather than technical drops. The Rangitaiki has cascading waterfalls tumbling into the river, native bush clinging to sheer rock gorges, and forest views that frame the whole run. A professional guide leads the group through the water and handles the safety briefing on shore before you push off.
The day runs about six hours total. Pickup happens around 10:30am from central Rotorua accommodation, or you can meet the group at Murupara Motorcamp at 11:30am. From there it's a 20-minute drive to the river. After paddling, you'll return to the motorcamp to change out of your wet gear and eat a light lunch before heading back to Rotorua. The operator provides all the equipment you need (wetsuit, helmet, paddle, life jacket), so you show up with swimwear, a towel and a sense of what you're doing.
Minimum age is 5, and children must have an adult with them. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness to paddle for 90 minutes, and a minimum weight of 30 kilograms applies. The trip doesn't run if passenger numbers fall below the minimum. If that happens, you'll get an alternative date or a full refund.
